AIDS continues to claim millions of lives worldwide, with South Africa accounting for a significant number of new infections. The World Health Organisation reported that AIDS claimed 40.4 million lives in July 2023, despite the availability of preventative measures and treatment. Setshaba and SRC Community Advisory Board members attended World AIDS Day to discuss the importance of community-led interventions and a community-centered approach to HIV management. They emphasised the need for community-led initiatives to address unique challenges faced by different populations, such as stigma and discrimination. Dr Robert Moraba, SRC Clinical Director, and Dr Babalwa ‘Babs’ Maholwana, SRC CEO, highlighted the positive impact of community-led interventions on improving HIV outcomes. The theme ‘Let Communities Lead’ emphasises the need to empower communities to take charge of HIV prevention and treatment efforts, involving them in decision-making and implementation.
